Maggie Grace was born Margaret Grace Denig on September 21, 1983. She is an American actress best known for her role as Shannon Rutherford in ABC TV series Lost. Her parents had divorced and they moved together with their mother into Los Angeles. She landed her debut role, as Rachel's Room's title character, in 2001, despite having a difficult time with finances. The TV film Murder in Greenwich where she portrayed 15-year-old Martha Moxley earned her the nomination of a Young Artist Award. Grace Rutherford played Shannon Rutherford for Lost's first two seasons in 2004, as well as sharing a Screen Actors Guild Award (with other cast members) alongside her. Leaving the series Grace wanted to appear on film more frequently, having been cast as the opposite of Tom Welling in The Fog in 2005. She appeared in Suburban Girl The Jane Austen Book Club (both 2007) and also starred alongside Liam Neeson as Kim Mills in Taken in the year 2008. The character she plays is Faith who is both an avid stargazer as well as a socialite. Hank Moody, played by David Duchovny, falls for her. As a member of the Gyllenhaal family she is the daughter of film makers Stephen Gyllenhaal and Naomi Achs and the older cousin of the actor Jake Gyllenhaal. As a teenager she appeared in small roles in her father's movies and co-starred with her older sister in Donnie Darko the popular cult movie. The next film she appeared in was Adaptation Confessions of a Dangerous Mind both in 2002 and Mona Lisa Smile (2003). Gyllenhaal was nominated to win the Golden Globe Award in both the action drama Sherrybaby (2005) and the love story Secretary (2002). The two films received acclaim from critics. In the wake of several successful commercial films like World Trade Center in 2006 she gained greater recognition for her role as Rachel Dawes (the superhero) in The Dark Knight (2007). The year 2009 was the time she received a nomination for the award of Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards for her portrayal of a single mom on screen in Crazy Heart. Following that she continued to play in comedies as well as dramas such Nanny McPhee And The Big Bang (2010) Hysteria (2011) and Will Not Back Down (12). Her other roles include an agent in the action-thriller White House Down (2013), a Secret Service agent in the action thriller White House Down (2013) a musician in Frank (2014) as well as the title role in the film The Kindergarten Teacher (2018). Gyllenhaal debuted as a writer and director in 2021 with her drama about psychological issues The Lost Daughter. For this movie, she received the Best Screenplay Award at the Venice International Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award.
